It’s a long road from obscurity to a career in country music and Shelly Dubois knows every step of the way as she continues her
musical journey. From Peace River, Alberta, at the tender age of thirteen, Shelly was performing in her first band throughout the
Peace Country for weddings, corporate functions, rodeos, etc. and continued to do so for the rest of her teenage and young adult
years. She is now a seasoned entertainer having performed on small intimate stages as far away as Nashville to some of Canada’s
biggest country music festivals such as Merritt Mountain Music Festival, Calgary Stampede and Sunfest Country Music Festival.
While living in British Columbia, her talents garnered her nominations in 2011 with the BC Country Music Association for Female Artist
of the Year, Horizon Award, and Traditional Country Award. Shelly moved back to her native Alberta in 2012 and after one year, Shelly
was very pleased to be nominated by the Alberta Country Music Association in 2012 for Female Artist and Fan’s Choice and once again
for 2013 Female Artist.
Shelly’s recording career came later in life and in May 2008, Shelly Dubois released her debut CD “I’m Not Looking Back”. All ten songs
are penned by Dubois – of those, “About Men”, “I’m Not Lookin’ Back” and “Time for Leavin” all received internet radio play in
Canada, the United States, Austria, France and the Netherlands. But shortly after the release of her CD, tragedy struck Shelly’s family.
Her eldest daughter, Chantal had been diagnosed in 2006 with brain cancer and was going through treatments but things worsened in
June, 2008 and Chantal passed on October 17, 2008. Shelly and her family were devastated so she took time to grieve her loss. “I
thought I would never sing again,” says Dubois, “But with the encouragement from family, friends and my music family, I slowly eased
back into my music and found that it was actually healing for me.” Shelly returned to music in 2010 and got back in the studio in 2012
and released singles - “This Town” written by notable Nashville songwriter Gretchen Peters followed by "Flowers", “Crazy Lovin’ You”
and "Time” penned by Dubois. These singles received country music radio play in Canada and in France.
In memory of her daughter Chantal, and wanting to give back, Shelly worked with the BC Childhood Cancer Association and helped
raise over $10,000 that was donated to various families going through this crisis. Now a resident back in Alberta, Shelly is currently a
board member for Helping Families Handle Cancer – a non-profit organization based in Calgary that provides financial support to
families that have a child battling cancer. As well, she has also toured the province performing shows to help raise funds and
awareness for this foundation. Dubois has also written and self-published a book entitled “I Lost My Child To Cancer: A Mother’s
Story from Diagnosis to Healing After Loss” and is currently writing songs out of its subject matter.
Through it all, the talented Dubois continues to chip away at her own craft by performing and writing songs for her next project. With
her clear country voice, her ability to connect with an audience and with the support of her fans, Shelly looks forward to providing
country music for years to come.
